The sugar industry in Mexico is historically one of the most important, because of its economic and social relevance in the field. It takes place in 15 states and 227 municipalities, generating a primary production value of around 30 billion pesos.

Sugar cane is one of the crops of major economic importance at global, national and state levels, Chiapas contributes with 4% of the national sugar production, ranking fourth in acreage in the state after corn, coffee and bean.

In recent years Puerto Chiapas worked together with Grupo Porres Ingenio, located in the municipality of Huixtla, a leader in the states of Veracruz, Michoacan and Chiapas; one of the largest producers processing 1,290,421 tons of cane to produce 131;081 tons of sugar; which takes for the eighth time to Gran Puerto de la Frontera Sur, for exports to the US, operating in the port from January 21 for sugar exports in two stages of 25,000 tons each, the first will be held on 3 March with the arrival of the vessel MV Courageous, 170 mts length of Puntarenas, Costa Rica and the second is scheduled in April, to complete the export of 50 thousand tons to Puerto Crockett, California, United States.

With this kind of operations Puerto Chiapas demonstrates that has the possibility of coordinating with the rest of the country and international markets, having as a logistics tool the benefits of being within an EEZ which promotes the establishment of agro-industrial clusters and economic development of the region .
