Puerto Chiapas, Chiapas February 7th, 2012.
Press Release No. 030/2012
On February 2, 2012, at 10:00 am Puerto Chiapas celebrates the arrival of the ship "USCGC Midgett", frigate type with american flag, from the port of Acajutla, El Salvador; which has a length of 116.0 meters, beam 14.0 and 3.250 tons gross registered, powered by diesel engines and gas turbines with variable pitch propellers.
This ship USCGC Midgett "United States Coast Guard", is the smallest branch of the five ones integrating the United States armed forces. It is dedicated to the international port security, maritime boundaries and international waters. In this regard, the Coast Guard (USCGC Midgett) is responsible for preventing illegal immigration and trafficking of arms. It also ensures the safety of navigation and nautical activities (fishing, tourism, oil exploration), participates in search and rescue activities in inland waters.
It also cares maritime natural resources (combat illegal fishing, marine pollution, etc). Maintains scientific support services (research and extension basin, polar and climate). The Coast Guards (USCGC Midgett) depend on the Departments of Homeland Security in peacetime but in wartime can be transferred to the Department of Defense.
This is the third time that Puerto Chiapas receives a naval vessel, since earlier, in this port, French and Japanese flagged frigate ships, docked.
Puerto Chiapas, more than a port, a whole experience.
