History

Puerto Chiapas began goods movement with a wooden pier in the years of the Porfiriato, in 1975 opened the multipurpose terminal and fishing piers "Puerto Chiapas", making exports of bananas and corn in the early 80's.

For the year of 1998 was reactivated the Tuna canning plant (adjacent to the port), and thus began his maritime fleet to operate continuously through Puerto Chiapas, likewise the fishing activities of shrimp boats and shark fishing boats remained. In 2000, the rehabilitation program and port expansion begins with the vision to serve new productive sectors. It was in 2001 that infrastructure projects were announced to achieve modernization of Puerto Chiapas, with an investment of 300 million pesos, starting in 2004 in conjunction with the State Government to build infrastructure works, through works like the extension of the Eastern breakwater by 450 meters, the construction of a pier of 250 meters, and in 2005 the construction of a modern Care Center Rail with comfortable facilities for the reception of cruise passengers. Generating with these works a new perspective for the port, "the market of international cruise".

In 2005 Puerto Chiapas satisfactorily fulfilled an important role in national security, providing support services for receipt of cargo ships, Ro-Ro, tanker and ships from Navy of Mexico, to make a sea bridge and meet the emergency caused by Hurricane Stan, which put offline Soconusco region.

It was in February 2006 that the cruise terminal was open with the arrival of the ship "The World", counting on with a specialized infrastructure to take care of these type of vessels, with a draft of 32 feet. From this arrival Puerto Chiapas began his career as a tourist destination gradually increasing the arrival of cruise ships, having the capacity for receiving double cruise arrivals.

From 2010 the business of the port was reactivated, with the operation of products such as corn, fertilizer and bananas. Driving in the 2011 the first Commercial Fixed Route operated by the shipping line Hapang Loyd, which made its first arrival on January 16, 2011 with the container ship "MV Mercs Jaffna", with 161.09 mts. long and the 15,636 GRT which discharged 150 containers. This trade route was scheduled to fourteen day arrivals having as destinations: Puerto Chiapas - Manzanillo - Around the world. During these operations there were 19 arrivals for exports including: coffee, honey, mango, mineral and imports of pianos, drinks, parts, packaging and paraffins. But due to low demand for regional burden Hapang Loyd had to delay their arrivals.

On December 23, 2011, Puerto Chiapas recorded the first operation of wind power equipment, importing 48 blades from Spain through the vessel "B/M Valdivia" which came from Antwerphen, Belgium with the ultimate destiny of Arriaga, Chiapas. This was a very important date because that day was the first time in the history of the port which carried out two simultaneous operations, performing at the same time bulk carrier discharge "Oslo Bulk 2" with 5,902 tons of corn from Topolobampo, Sinaloa. To date, Puerto Chiapas has had significant movements of agricultural bulk and containerized cargo; thanks to these motions, on February 15, 2012 was opened the first terminal of agricultural bulk with private investment in the port; the bulk mineral, has become one of the potential export products of the port, exporting titanium mineral to various ports of China.

In the tourism sector, as a result of its efforts in 2010 with representatives from the Ministries of Tourism and Port Authority of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico (the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas), on January 20th, arrived to Puerto Chiapas the cruise ship Azamara Quest, achieving the confirmation of the project called “Mesoamerican route”, in which our port participates as a complete destiny, offering a new alternative on touristic products.

Today Puerto Chiapas is viewed as a planned port, aimed to strengthening and development through the creation of projects that constitute a trigger factor in generating investment and growth for the state of Chiapas.
